ECAL U.F.O.G.O Plastic Free Kite Workshop

Fogo is a small island in Newfoundland, Canada, nicknamed the ‘rock in the sea’. In the fall of 2022, we completed a short and enjoyable week-long workshop that took advantage of one of the island’s most abundant resources: wind. We worked with the ShoreFast Foundation, an organization that works in a variety of ways to create a sustainable economy on the island, to develop a plastic-free kite. Fogo Island recently announced plans to become completely plastic-free in the coming years, and with the increasing number of tourists, there is a growing demand for souvenirs of this special place. The kite developed in this workshop was intended to be made on the island and sold in the Fogo Island Workshop Souvenir Shop.

Fogo Island’s history is based on dried cod, and there is still a deep-rooted life among the cod and local people that remain around the island. In this workshop, we designed a large kite inspired by Fogo Island’s iconic dried cod, and we made the plastic-free kite using birch, ripstop organic cotton, and hemp fiber string.
